The Western Addition Beacon Center at Wallenberg High School is a student-driven
afterschool program that offers Wallenberg students various types of programming that promote leadership, skill building, and academic success. The Western Addition Beacon Center offers strong academic support through its partnership with the SFUSD ExCEL Afterschool program to offer high quality academic services including daily multi-subject tutoring, California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and SAT preparation.
Student-driven clubs include Black Student Union, Ecology Club, and Model United Nations.
Buchanan YMCA’s Model Legislature & Court is a statewide youth educational program involving 2,800 high school students in an annual interactive experience based upon California’s State government. Student delegates participate in executive functions, legislative activities, and trial court modeled on the three branches of California’s State government, or work in related areas including lobbies and print and broadcast media.
Buchanan YMCA’s Model United Nations is a statewide youth educational program involving 650 middle school students in an annual interactive experience that simulates the United Nations.
Student ambassadors
research, debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions focusing on international issues, including disputes between countries, peace-keeping responsibilities, border crisis, stabilizing financial markets and dealing with
hunger, disease and poverty. They also choose roles within
the five organs of the United Nations.
